Nuevo Laredo plays a central role in Mexico’s international trade dynamics, driven by its strong export orientation and its position along the U.S.–Mexico border. In 2024, the municipality recorded international sales totaling US$487 million and international purchases of US$411 million, resulting in a positive net trade balance of US$128 million during the period.

Export activity is led by high-value manufacturing and industrial goods. The top export products in 2024 were Instruments and Apparatus Used in Medical Sciences (US$1.404 billion), followed by Electronic Devices with Heating Functions (US$674 million) and Electric Water Heaters, Instantaneous or Storage, and Electric Immersion Heaters (US$642 million). This export mix reflects the city’s integration into advanced manufacturing and specialized industrial supply chains.

The United States remains Nuevo Laredo’s primary export destination, accounting for US$4.767 billion in shipments during 2024. Other relevant international markets include Japan (US$7.21 million) and Chile (US$6.9 million), underscoring the municipality’s participation in diversified global trade flows.

On the import side, the main products entering Nuevo Laredo in 2024 were Instruments and Apparatus Used in Medical Sciences (US$501 million), Valves and Similar Articles for Pipes, Boilers, or Tanks, including Pressure-Reducing and Thermostatically Controlled Valves (US$321 million), and Parts and Accessories for Motor Vehicles (US$261 million). These imports support local manufacturing, assembly, and cross-border production processes.

The United States is also the leading country of origin for imports, with US$2.307 billion, followed by China (US$1.021 billion) and Japan (US$132 million). This trade structure highlights Nuevo Laredo’s role as a strategic entry point for industrial inputs and components used across regional and international value chains.

Overall, Nuevo Laredo’s economic profile reflects a trade-driven economy with strong integration into North American and global markets, supported by manufacturing specialization, logistics capacity, and cross-border connectivity within the Laredo Region.

Nuevo Laredo’s economy is anchored by a strong industrial base. According to socioeconomic studies, manufacturing accounts for nearly 40% of local economic activity, followed by transportation and warehousing, reflecting the city’s dual role as a production center and a logistics gateway along the U.S.–Mexico border.

The municipality also benefits from its participation in Mexico’s export manufacturing framework. As of October 2025, the state of Tamaulipas registered 349 IMMEX establishments, of which 33 are located in Nuevo Laredo, reinforcing the city’s relevance within export-oriented industrial operations.
