MAG made an investment of more than 5 million dollars in new machinery and extrusion equipment

With an investment of more than 5 million dollars, MAG Specialties Mexico in Nuevo Laredo is about to start production with new equipment that will be in the installation process.

It is extrusion equipment; a press that has a capability of 2,800 tons of thrust. With this new project, the company is planning within a medium and long term to expand into the scrap foundry sector, recovering thus the surplus, since those are pieces that have no use. This project implies that instead of returning the scrap to the United States – where it was melted and then returned to the plant in Nuevo Laredo – is now cast in the plant in this city.

“We are a few weeks away from starting production with this new equipment the corporate has trusted the operative and technical personnel within Mexico to take the best advantage of it. The team we shape has matured to the extent that it is the key to the confidence deposited in us for this expansion; it is something we are already seeing, we are touching it and this talks about how well this new administration in the company is doing; personnel has much to do, and even more if they are motivated,” assured Guillermo Cano, human resources manager of MAG.

MAG SPECIALTIES MEXICO

MAG Specialties Mexico began operations in Nuevo Laredo as MAG in April 2012.  However, its history – talking of maquila companies in Nuevo Laredo – is of 15 years; in fact, the employees in this company have reached that seniority serving the company, since MAG is an extension of what previously was known as Timminco.

When starting operations as MAG, the company committed to continuing with this company’s workforce when buying the equipment, the knowledge, and the technology; nowadays it has a workforce of 130 employees.

At its moment, MAG had two operation plants (I and II,) currently the company operations are located at the facilities of its former first building in the neighborhood Campestre in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas; including 80 thousand square feet of productive area; this talks about the growth the company has achieved throughout the years and of the confidence provided by Nuevo Laredo to foreign investment and achieve thus companies like MAG decide to continue growing in this city.

MAG is of Chinese capital and has an American corporate located in Denver, Colorado, United States. Its production approach is intended to the metal-mechanic sector and its process consists of magnesium profiles extrusion with production near 250 thousand pounds per month.

This product serves to cathode (anode) protection, which originated the settling of MAG in Nuevo Laredo. Having the extrusion area expansion allowed it to access the construction and of the petroleum industry market.

Talking a little more of this company’s corporate, MAG was founded by Ryan Wong, right hand of the company’s owner and main shareholder.

It is worth mentioning that MAG is only present in its corporate offices in Denver and the current production plant in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.

MAG’s GROWTH

Talking about its spaces and personnel, MAG started operations with 15 employees; as they are big processes; the extrusion press occupies about half of the building infrastructure, which does not allow more space to have the common distribution of cells which usually characterize a maquila company.

“The employees’ comparative, which is usually used as standard, does not work like this for MAG since what counts for us is the amount of product we already have the capability – not only to manufacture – but to machining. We are talking about an increase in the volume of about 500 % of the capability we had since previously were not only extruded 60 or 70 thousand pounds per month,” referred Cano.

As maquila company, MAG has as a customer its corporate in Denver, to which it sales to placing it in Laredo, Texas; here the corporate is in charge of distributing it mainly – 90 % - to the American market, the rest goes to China and other parts of the world.

WORKFORCE

It has been demonstrated more than two times that customers looking for savings, finish paying for quality.  These customers have returned to MAG, the workforce leaves its footprint on the product and that shows.

“People here are happy, people here have that plus, gives more to the finish, to product care and that is in the workforce,” said Guillermo Cano.

MOTIVATED STAFF

Here lies in much communication implemented by Dean Robert Hartwick, general manager of the plant, and this has to do with listening to his employees, demonstrating thus that empathy generates good results.

“This also allows the opportunity in other areas, such as HR, to keep his employees motivated; providing an interesting touch to the needs of what is happening with its personnel; this is what we call emotional wage, and this part helps to keep a low personnel turnover, since people which at one moment decided to leave the company has returned, and this talks well about what we do here,” ended the manager.
