William Dietrich has been appointed as the new Director and CEO of the Port of Brownsville, Texas, following a unanimous vote by the Brownsville Navigation District (BND) Board of Commissioners.
In December 2023, Dietrich was named interim Director while the BND Board conducted a thorough national search for a permanent leader. Dietrich expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed in him, stating, "It is an honor to continue serving the Port of Brownsville, and I am grateful to the Board of Commissioners for their trust. Together with them and our port team, we will continue to create economic opportunities that benefit our communities."
Dietrich, who joined the Port of Brownsville in July 2022 as Chief of Police, brings a strong background in security and investigation. His extensive career includes 26 years with the Brownsville Police Department, where he held various leadership roles, culminating in his service as a commander.
Esteban Guerra, President of the BND, emphasized the significance of Dietrich's appointment, highlighting his role in the port's ongoing growth. "I want to congratulate Dietrich on his appointment and acknowledge the unprecedented achievements we've made, which allow us to look forward to a future of continued success. I am confident that under his leadership, we will establish ourselves as a beacon of prosperity," Guerra stated.
In addition to his policing career, Dietrich has an impressive academic and professional background. He is a graduate of the Canadian Police College and has received training at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Bomb Technician School and the FBI Hazardous Devices School. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Science from the University of Texas at Brownsville (now the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and a Master's degree in Management and Leadership from Western Governor's University.
With this appointment, Dietrich becomes the ninth Executive Director in the 88-year history of the Port of Brownsville, marking a new chapter in the development of this vital maritime infrastructure.
