Weslaco, Texas is set to strengthen its role as a retail and service hub in the Rio Grande Valley with the groundbreaking of the Shops at Westgate, a project valued at more than USD 6 million. Anchored by supermarket chain H-E-B, the development will introduce new retail opportunities, create more than 145 jobs, and support the city’s rapid population growth.

Strategic Location and Expanding Trade Corridors

The project is situated at the intersection of Westgate Drive and Business 83, an area that sees daily traffic of more than 148,000 vehicles, according to TxDOT counts. Its location places it adjacent to Weslaco High School, South Texas College, and the H-E-B Distribution Center, embedding the development within one of the city’s busiest corridors.

With three new retail buildings, each over 8,000 square feet, the project is designed to attract a diverse tenant mix, supported by ample parking and high visibility for businesses seeking strong regional exposure.

Local Leadership and Private Sector Collaboration

The Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco (EDCW) has emphasized that the Shops at Westgate project not only expands the city’s retail portfolio but also contributes to Weslaco’s tax base and overall competitiveness.

Local leadership and developers alike highlight the initiative as evidence of the city’s appeal to private investors. Corporate Asset Partners and The Garansunay Group, recognized players in Texas retail real estate, are leading the project and have identified Weslaco’s demographics and strategic location as key drivers of their investment decision.

Catalyst for Future Development

The arrival of Shops at Westgate reflects the momentum of Weslaco’s economic transformation. As one of the Rio Grande Valley’s fastest-growing cities, Weslaco is drawing increased attention not only from regional developers but also from national brands seeking access to South Texas markets.

By combining private capital with the support of public entities like EDCW, the project is expected to serve as a catalyst for further commercial and mixed-use investments, ensuring that Weslaco continues to expand its role as a business-friendly and investment-ready community.
