Weslaco is strengthening its position in aviation workforce development through a new partnership between South Texas College and Mid Valley Airport that will launch an Avionics Technician Program in Fall 2026.

Developed through South Texas College’s Center for Advanced Training and Apprenticeships (CATA), the program will be the first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley, creating a specialized training pathway tied directly to aviation industry demand.

A new technical workforce opportunity for the Rio Grande Valley

The initiative reflects growing interest in expanding technical education aligned with high-demand industries in South Texas. Avionics technicians play a key role in aircraft maintenance and operations, working with navigation systems, communications equipment, and electronic flight systems.

By connecting the program with Mid Valley Airport in Weslaco, the initiative also creates a practical training environment that links education with real operational settings.

Weslaco continues investing in workforce development

For Weslaco, the program adds another component to the city’s broader effort to support education, innovation, and career development opportunities connected to emerging and specialized industries.

As aviation, logistics, and advanced technical sectors continue to expand across Texas, workforce initiatives like this help prepare local talent while strengthening the region’s long-term competitiveness.
