The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is setting a new standard in education, research, and industry collaboration through its cutting-edge Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF). Strategically designed to promote regional and binational economic development, the AMRF is reshaping how higher education contributes to real-world innovation and workforce readiness.

Spanning 14,000 square feet and equipped with state-of-the-art industrial-grade technology, the AMRF aims to bridge the gap between basic and applied research. Its mission is to generate real technological solutions that address the evolving needs of the manufacturing sector.

In an interview with México Industry, Dr. Can Saygin, UTRGV’s Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate College, explained that the facility is intentionally designed for students, faculty, and researchers to work with the same tools, simulators, and platforms used by leading companies in the industry.

“This facility accelerates the learning process. When students enter the workforce, they’ll already be familiar with these environments, significantly reducing the adaptation curve,” he noted.

More than a Lab: An Innovation Ecosystem

The AMRF is far more than an academic laboratory. It is envisioned as a dynamic hub for technological development and applied research, capable of simulating and solving real-world industrial challenges. Its high-end machine tools, robotic systems, and industrial controllers are fully available for testing, experimentation, and industry collaboration.

“We can respond quickly to the needs of companies, and that leads to strategic partnerships,” said Dr. Saygin. “Many of these collaborations are backed by funded contracts, generating revenue for the university and reinforcing our ties with the region.”

Binational Collaboration and Regional Transformation

The facility’s impact reaches beyond U.S. borders. UTRGV is currently exploring partnerships with educational institutions and manufacturing firms in Mexico—particularly in cities like Reynosa—offering students hands-on binational experiences that connect local talent to real opportunities on both sides of the border.

“We want to change the perception that universities are disconnected from regional needs. This facility is designed to motivate collaboration and make us an active part of industrial development,” emphasized Dr. Saygin.

Key Indicators of Success: Employability, Innovation, and Strategic Alliances

The success of the AMRF will be measured by a variety of indicators, including:

  • The formation of strategic partnerships,
  • The creation of better-paid jobs for students with hands-on experience,
  • The development of new companies, products, and ideas,
  • And the expansion of opportunities that contribute to the region’s transformation.

Industry-Connected Education

One of the core principles of the AMRF is to provide "industry-connected education." From day one, students are involved in real-world projects in collaboration with companies. This innovative model breaks away from traditional academic frameworks, empowering students with practical technical skills and preparing them holistically for the future.

Through its commitment to innovation, binational collaboration, and technological advancement, UTRGV is establishing itself as a key driver of transformation along the border, generating knowledge, opportunities, and progress for the entire region.
