UTRGV Hosts Metropolitan Automotive Cluster at Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) hosted representatives of the Metropolitan Automotive Cluster at its Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility, marking the conclusion of a three-day tour of the Rio South Texas region. The delegation included six Mexican companies, primarily Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers, which explored the region’s industrial, academic, logistics, and innovation capabilities as potential platforms for new business projects.

During the visit, the delegation, led by Elisa Crespo, president of the Metropolitan Automotive Cluster, had the opportunity to learn about projects underway at UTRGV, as well as advanced technologies focused on advanced manufacturing and applied research. The visit highlighted how collaboration among universities, research centers, and industry can contribute to the development of new capabilities and technology-driven solutions.

Crespo emphasized the importance of gaining first-hand knowledge of this type of infrastructure during the tour of Rio South Texas, noting that research and development centers can serve as a platform both for companies already operating in the region and for those exploring new expansion opportunities. “It is clear to us that these types of research centers can help drive the growth of companies that are already established, as well as those that are considering coming here, with all the development we have seen over these past two days,” she said.

The visit to UTRGV was part of an agenda coordinated by COSTEP, led by its CEO, Adam González, who explained that throughout the three-day tour, the companies were introduced to the region’s academic and manufacturing systems, the processes involved in establishing operations, and other elements of the Rio South Texas business environment. The agenda also included Abraham Guerra, president of IDL (International Distribution & Logistics), who presented the logistics alternatives available in the region for distribution and access to the U.S. market.

Dr. James Li, director of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility, highlighted the importance of hosting the delegation and expressed his interest in strengthening collaboration to bring more companies to the region. “I’m very happy that Adam was able to assemble this great delegation to come here. I hope we can work together, not just with you, but through you, we can bring more companies to the Valley and create local jobs,” he said.

For UTRGV, hosting the delegation also represents an opportunity to connect the university’s research and advanced manufacturing capabilities with companies seeking to strengthen their presence in North America. For members of the Metropolitan Automotive Cluster, the tour concluded with a broader understanding of the resources available across Rio South Texas Region, from talent and research to manufacturing and logistics, providing additional elements for companies considering expanding their operations into the United States.
