During its participation in THE LOGISTICS WORLD | SUMMIT & EXPO 2025, the Port of Brownsville highlighted its role as one of the key strategic hubs for international trade, particularly between Mexico and the United States. Guillermo Rico Leal, Director of Business Development and Marketing at the port, emphasized the relevance of the event and the port’s importance within global supply chains.
“We came to this exhibition, which I consider the most important logistics event in Mexico, with the goal of promoting the port, strengthening our brand, and of course, connecting with friends, current clients, and potential partners. We always set up a booth to showcase the latest updates and services we offer,” he stated.
Located in Texas, the Port of Brownsville is the only deepwater seaport in the United States that lies just 10 miles from the Mexican border. This unique geographic advantage, combined with its operational efficiency and vast capacity, positions it as a vital player in U.S.-Mexico trade.
“Ninety percent of the cargo that moves through this port is either coming from or going to Mexico. We offer services that boost productivity and competitiveness for businesses, adding significant value to their supply chains,” Rico Leal noted.
Among the port’s most noteworthy accomplishments is its leadership in steel exports. As Rico Leal explained:
“We are the largest U.S. exporter of steel to Mexico. Just Ternium alone handles 5.5 million tons per year through our port, in addition to other products like steel coils and aluminum ingots.”
The Port of Brownsville also operates Foreign Trade Zone No. 62, which allows businesses to store goods without paying duties until the products are exported.
“This is a major advantage for our clients, as it offers flexibility and cost savings. We also provide extensive yards and warehouses, as well as sufficient docks to meet any logistical demand,” Rico Leal added.
Looking to the future, the port aims to attract new investments.
“We have 16,000 hectares of available land and a 50-hectare industrial park, making it an ideal location for companies seeking to establish operations in a strategic setting for nearshoring. It allows them to be closer to their U.S. customers and optimize their logistics,” he said.
The Port of Brownsville’s presence at THE LOGISTICS WORLD | SUMMIT & EXPO 2025 reaffirmed its commitment to boosting trade and investment on both sides of the border, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of international logistics development.
