The Texas – México Automotive Supercluster (TMASC) aims to establish
itself as a strategic axis for the automotive industry by leveraging the robust
infrastructure of Texas and the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo León,
Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí. This cluster not only boosts the production of
vehicles and automotive components but also strengthens international trade
between México and the United States, where vehicles and transportation
equipment account for 30% of U.S. imports from México.
This dynamic ecosystem has deepened binational integration by
streamlining commercial and logistical exchange between Texas and México.
Spearheaded by the Bexar Economic & Community Development, the supercluster
has seen significant growth over the past decade, attracting major investments
from leading OEMs such as Stellantis, BMW, Navistar, Caterpillar, and Tesla.
Its development has resulted in a strong regional supplier base and
optimized logistical infrastructure. "This corridor is a supercluster that
enhances the competitiveness of the automotive industry at a binational
level," stated David E. Marquez, Executive Director of Economic and
Community Development for Bexar County.
Infrastructure and Competitive Advantages
Strategically located along a vital corridor that connects major
regional highways (I-35, MX-85, and MX-57), TMASC encompasses four primary
automotive hubs, as well as several secondary centers that complement its
manufacturing and logistics capabilities. The region benefits from trade
policies that facilitate the movement of supplies and equipment, along with 31
ports of entry and 34 foreign trade zones in Texas-making it a critical point
for automotive production and export.
Moreover, Texas has implemented an $85 billion transportation plan for
the next decade, further advancing the region's infrastructure and reinforcing
its importance to the automotive sector.
Transformation and the Future of the Automotive Industry
TMASC has become a magnet for automotive investment, drawing over $10
billion in new facilities over the last ten years. As the industry shifts
toward electrification and innovation, TMASC is at the forefront supporting
electric vehicle (EV) production and advanced technologies such as
connectivity, software, and autonomous driving systems. In 2023 alone, $1.5
billion was allocated to adapt manufacturing plants within the cluster for EV
production, demonstrating a firm commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The cluster is now home to 14 OEMs, five corporate headquarters, and 16
assembly plants, positioning it as a key platform for automotive manufacturing
in North America.
Strategy and Growth Opportunities
To maintain its competitive edge in the global market, TMASC is focusing on its strategic advantages:
- Binational Integration: Its
geographic position enables cost optimization, access to skilled labor,
and improved connectivity to international markets
- Favorable Demographics: A young, highly
skilled workforce ensures long-term industrial stability and sustainable
growth.
- Integrated Logistics Network: With key
ports such as Houston and Corpus Christi, the region efficiently supports
global trade flows.
- Commitment to Sustainability: TMASC promotes
clean manufacturing, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction
initiatives.
- Reshoring Potential: Amid global
supply chain realignments, TMASC stands out as a prime destination for
nearshoring and reshoring operations.
The Texas - México Automotive Supercluster is poised to be a driving
force in the transformation of the automotive industry. With its world-class
infrastructure, strategic investments, and adaptability to emerging
technologies, TMASC is not only a leader in automotive manufacturing-but a
cornerstone of the future of mobility across North America.
