Texas A&M International University Strengthens Engineering Education to Meet Industrial Growth

The industrial growth taking place along the U.S.–Mexico border is not only driving new investments in infrastructure and logistics; it is also transforming the development of the talent that will support the next generation of industries.

During the Port Laredo Global Trade Summit 2026, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) presented part of its academic offerings and research initiatives aimed at strengthening the development of engineers capable of responding to the needs of strategic sectors such as advanced manufacturing, technology, aerospace, and defense.

For Rubén Martínez, Engineering Laboratory Coordinator at TAMIU, the university’s participation in the Summit reflects the institution’s commitment to the region’s economic growth and to preparing highly specialized professionals.

“Our presence here represents the growth of TAMIU and our engineering programs. We want to showcase the opportunities available to students and demonstrate how the university contributes to the development of Laredo and the entire region,” he explained.

Engineering as a Driver of Innovation

One of the main attractions at the TAMIU exhibit was a display of robots developed by university students as part of the institution’s research activities.

Although the demonstrations captured the attention of attendees, Martínez emphasized that the true value of these developments lies in their potential applications for improving quality of life.

“Robots are an excellent way to showcase the work of our students, but the most important aspect is the research they conduct. They are constantly developing improvements so these technologies can perform tasks in hospitals, nursing homes, and other environments where automation can support people,” he said.

The development of these types of projects allows students to gain practical experience while working on solutions with potential applications across different industrial sectors.

New Programs to Meet Industry Demand

As part of its growth strategy, TAMIU continues to expand its academic offerings in response to the demand for specialized talent generated by South Texas’ economic expansion.

The university currently offers programs in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering, and is preparing to introduce additional academic programs.

Martínez announced that in the fall of 2026, the institution will launch its first master’s degree in engineering. It is also working to add programs in Civil Engineering and Computer Science, expanding educational opportunities for students throughout the region.

Talent in High Demand Across Industry

The growth of TAMIU’s academic offerings directly responds to labor market needs.

According to Martínez, approximately 80% of TAMIU engineering graduates secure full-time positions at leading companies in strategic sectors.

These results reflect the close relationship between the university and industry, as well as the growing demand for engineers specializing in automation, technology, advanced manufacturing, and innovation.

In a context where North America’s competitiveness will increasingly depend on the availability of highly qualified talent, institutions such as Texas A&M International University are seeking to establish themselves as strategic partners in the region’s economic development by preparing the professionals who will drive the next stage of industrial growth in North America.
