STMA Pushes for Industry-Education Partnerships

Mike Willys, Executive Director of the South Texas Manufacturers Association (STMA), has called for a stronger collaboration between the manufacturing industry and educational institutions to provide students with a well-rounded education before they enter the workforce. During the STMA's August monthly meeting in McAllen, Texas, Willys emphasized that such partnerships are crucial for strengthening the workforce in the Rio Grande Valley.

Willys noted that this approach will not only allow students to gain practical work experience but also help them develop a sense of responsibility and improve their attention to detail. He added that companies increasingly need professionals who are skilled and up-to-date with the latest trends in manufacturing to stay competitive in production processes and emerging technologies.

The meeting also addressed the importance of reducing employee turnover, while providing insights into current hiring trends and wage increases. Attendees included economic development leaders, business executives, educators, and members of various organizations, all of whom echoed Willys' support for this strategy.

Several Economic Development Corporations (EDCs) from the Rio Grande Valley region were also present, sharing updates on infrastructure projects, investment opportunities, employment growth, and regional initiatives. Notable organizations included the Pharr EDC, McAllen EDC, Weslaco EDC, and the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC).

Industrial Growth on the Horizon

Janie Cavazos, Property and Business Manager at Pharr EDC, revealed that a significant event would be held in October to position Pharr as a premier investment destination, in collaboration with the Pharr International Bridge. She discussed promotional efforts in both Mexico and the U.S., aimed at attracting investments and creating jobs, in partnership with other economic development organizations.

Luis Bazán, Director of the Pharr International Bridge, highlighted that international trade through the crossing generated $46 billion over the past year. He further noted that trade volumes in 2024 have grown steadily, with a 3% monthly increase. Bazán also shared details of a recent expansion project that will double the bridge’s capacity to process trucks, thanks to a $47 million investment. Once completed in 2026, this expansion is expected to handle up to 10,000 trucks per day between Reynosa, Tamaulipas, and Pharr, Texas, creating new opportunities for regional industries and improving logistics operations.
