Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that Saronic Technologies will build Port Alpha, a next-generation shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, expected to become the largest shipyard in the United States for the production of medium- and large-class autonomous and autonomy-capable vessels. The project is one of the most ambitious industrial infrastructure and advanced manufacturing initiatives for the Rio Grande Valley region.
The project represents a capital investment of $3.248 billion and will create 10,000 new jobs, strengthening the nation's maritime manufacturing capacity and defense industrial base.
During the announcement, Abbott said the complex will mark a new chapter in American shipbuilding by combining advanced manufacturing, automation, and cutting-edge technologies. The governor noted that, once completed, the project is expected to generate approximately $750 million in annual wages for Texas workers. The initiative will also receive an $80 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF), an additional veteran hiring incentive, and will qualify under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.
Saronic Bets on Automation to Transform Shipbuilding
Founded in Austin in 2022, Saronic Technologies develops autonomous maritime systems by integrating autonomy software, scalable manufacturing, and advanced production technologies. The company explained that Port Alpha was designed to build vessels at a speed and scale not seen since World War II, with the goal of strengthening the United States' industrial capacity and maritime competitiveness for both commercial and defense applications.
Dino Mavrookas, the company's co-founder and CEO, said the investment represents far more than the construction of a shipyard. He noted that the project will help rebuild industrial capabilities, develop a highly skilled workforce, and establish a manufacturing platform capable of sustaining American leadership in the maritime sector for decades to come.
Brownsville Strengthens Its Position as an Advanced Maritime Manufacturing Hub
The company selected Texas because of its skilled workforce, existing infrastructure, logistics capabilities, and long-term expansion potential. As part of the project, Saronic will collaborate with the State of Texas, Cameron County, technical institutions, and universities to develop workforce training, technical education, and apprenticeship programs that will support long-term demand for qualified personnel.
The Port of Brownsville was chosen because of its competitive advantages for a project of this scale. Key factors included direct access to the Brownsville Ship Channel, the availability of industrial land for phased expansion, rail and logistics connectivity, and significant long-term growth potential.
"As the only deep-water seaport on the U.S.-Mexico border, the Port of Brownsville has long served as a strategic center for industry and shipbuilding. We are proud to welcome Saronic Technologies and the transformative opportunities Port Alpha will bring to our region," said Sergio Tito López, Chairman of the Brownsville Navigation District.
"I appreciate Governor Abbott's leadership and recognize the collaboration of Cameron County, Greater Brownsville EDC, and the Point Isabel Independent School District in making this project possible. Saronic's decision to invest in Brownsville reflects the strength of our community, our workforce, and our shared commitment to advancing American manufacturing," he added.
These conditions will enable the development of an industrial campus capable of expanding as production demand increases while maintaining efficient integration with supply chains and maritime operations.
Local officials emphasized that Port Alpha will drive economic development across the Rio Grande Valley by creating high-value jobs, generating new opportunities for suppliers and small businesses, and attracting additional industrial investment. They also highlighted that the project will help educate and train future generations of engineers and advanced manufacturing specialists, reinforcing Brownsville's role as a strategic center for the maritime industry and technological innovation.
A Major Boost for the Rio Grande Valley
The project represents an investment whose impact extends well beyond the shipbuilding industry. The development will strengthen the Port of Brownsville as one of Texas' leading industrial assets while positioning the Rio Grande Valley as a new destination for advanced manufacturing, automation, artificial intelligence, and defense projects.
The initiative is also expected to create thousands of highly specialized jobs, support the growth of regional suppliers, attract additional industrial investment, and strengthen the manufacturing ecosystem of South Texas.
The project also creates opportunities to deepen economic integration between Texas and Mexico, particularly with northeastern Mexico, where a strong base of manufacturing companies and specialized suppliers is well positioned to participate in maritime and defense supply chains.
With a phased development strategy and significant room for future expansion, Project Alpha positions the Port of Brownsville as one of North America's most important emerging centers for next-generation shipbuilding
