With an investment of 400 million dollars, executives from the Port of Brownsville, Texas, the company NextDecade, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) launched the "Brazos Island Harbor Channel Improvement Project" at the Port of Brownsville.
This project, with a total investment of 539.5 million dollars, will expand the "Brownsville Ship Channel" navigation channel from 42 to 52 feet over a distance of 17 miles.
This will allow the entry of larger and more capable vessels, benefiting trade by reducing maritime traffic, improving safety and efficiency, and positively impacting shipping costs.
The project will also have an impact on the creation of up to 6,000 jobs for dredging work and 800 permanent jobs.
The "Brazos Island Harbor Channel Improvement Project" will be carried out in two phases, the first with an investment of 400 million dollars through Next Decade Corporation, and the second phase with 139.5 million dollars, of which 71.5 million will be provided by the Port of Brownsville and 68 million in federal funds from the U.S. government.
Various authorities and representatives from the companies and organizations involved attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
This project enhances the position of the Port of Brownsville as a strategic point for international trade, aiming to attract greater investments and increase its relevance in the South Texas region.
