The Port of Brownsville hosted a workforce-focused roundtable at the Texas A&M Rio Grande Valley Advanced Manufacturing Hub, bringing together public officials, port leadership, and industry representatives to address training initiatives and talent development in the region.
The session included the participation of John Cornyn, highlighting the growing attention at the federal level toward workforce readiness as a key factor in sustaining industrial expansion and investment across South Texas.
Workforce development at the center of industrial growth
The discussion focused on existing training programs and opportunities to strengthen the regional workforce pipeline in alignment with industry needs. As manufacturing activity continues to evolve, the availability of skilled labor has become a central consideration for companies evaluating expansion and site selection.
Hosting the roundtable at the Advanced Manufacturing Hub reflects the role of the Port of Brownsville not only as a logistics platform, but also as a facilitator of initiatives tied to workforce development and industrial readiness. The facility itself serves as a link between education, training, and real-world manufacturing requirements.
Port leadership and industry collaboration
The meeting brought together key figures from the Brownsville Navigation District, including Esteban “Steve” Guerra, Chairman of the Brownsville Navigation District, Sergio Tito Lopez, Vice Chairman, John Reed, Secretary, and Ernesto Gutierrez, Commissioner, alongside William Dietrich, Port Director and CEO of the Port of Brownsville.
Their participation, along with industry partners, reflects a coordinated approach to preparing the region’s workforce for future demand. This type of collaboration is increasingly relevant as ports expand their role beyond cargo movement to include industrial development, manufacturing support, and workforce alignment.
By convening stakeholders at the Advanced Manufacturing Hub, the Port of Brownsville continues to reinforce its position as a strategic asset for regional growth, where infrastructure, industry, and talent development intersect to support long-term economic competitiveness.
