Amazon announced a new manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, with an investment of several billion dollars and the creation of between 300 and 500 specialized jobs in manufacturing and engineering.
The new facility will produce robotic systems that will be used across Amazon’s operations to assist employees with repetitive tasks and heavy lifting, strengthening the company’s presence in the advanced manufacturing sector.
The project is part of Amazon’s long-term commitment to Texas, where the company says it has invested more than $100 billion since 2010. Amazon currently employs approximately 86,000 people across Texas, including around 17,000 in Austin.
Austin’s selection for the project reflects its availability of specialized talent, leading universities and an innovation ecosystem that has made the city one of the major technology and advanced manufacturing hubs in the United States.
“Texas is the new frontier for innovation,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “We congratulate Amazon on its expanded investment in Texas. With the best business climate in the nation, easy access to global markets, and a deep pipeline of skilled talent, Texas offers advanced manufacturers and technology leaders unmatched resources to innovate and expand.”
Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s Vice President of Worldwide Economic Development, highlighted the quality of educational programs at local universities that contribute to the development of specialized talent.
“Austin’s talented workforce, world-class universities, and strong community partnerships make it the ideal home for this facility,” she said.
Robotics and Talent Development
In addition to producing robotic systems, Amazon aims to strengthen the development of specialized talent in Austin.
Since 2023, the company has worked with The University of Texas through the Amazon Science Hub, which focuses on machine learning and robotics research through fellowships, projects and apprenticeship opportunities.
The company will also expand its collaboration with Austin Independent School District and Del Valle Independent School District to promote STEM education and access to computer science programs.
Through Amazon Future Engineer, more than 85,000 Texas students have participated in technology and computer science education programs.
The strategy also includes workforce training. Globally, more than 700,000 Amazon employees have used the company’s Career Choice program to pursue education in high-demand fields, including robotics. In Texas, approximately 14,500 employees have participated in the program.
The new facility represents a commitment to integrating manufacturing, robotics, engineering and talent development within a single ecosystem, further strengthening Austin’s position as one of Texas’ leading industrial innovation hubs.
