During the Index Nuevo Laredo Forum, Felipe Romero, Executive Manager of Marketing and Communications at Port Laredo, shared the city’s vision of becoming more than just a trade corridor. “Laredo today represents much more than a crossing point; we are the logistical heart of commerce between Mexico and the United States,” he affirmed.

A Strategic Vision for Transformation

Romero outlined Port Laredo’s goal of evolving from handling one-quarter of the total trade volume to becoming a center of value where logistics, manufacturing, and technology intersect.

“Our vision,” he explained, “is to transition from volume to value—where innovation and integration define the next era of trade.”

This transformation is powered by the Smart Shoring model; a binational strategy connecting U.S. production with Mexico’s industrial capabilities to reinforce North American supply chains and create high-value jobs on both sides of the border.

Key Cross-Border Challenges

Romero identified three major challenges impacting cross-border commerce: extended crossing times, high logistics costs, and supply chain security. These factors, he said, directly influence competitiveness and operational efficiency.

Institutional Collaboration and Technological Solutions

To address these challenges, Port Laredo works closely with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM), and the SAT to streamline customs processes, expand critical infrastructure, and encourage digital management systems.

The port also provides technical support, Trade Tech programs, and industrial tours that link exporters and importers with the local logistics network—from the international airport and rail system to the active Free Trade Zones (FTZs). “We connect businesses directly with the value network that exists here,” said Romero.

Opportunities for Mexican Companies

With the global rise of nearshoring and smart-shoring, Port Laredo has become the natural partner for companies establishing binational operations. The city offers immediate access to the U.S. market, supported by modern infrastructure such as the World Trade Bridge and the new International Rail Bridge, along with programs that simplify dual customs logistics.

“Our goal,” Romero emphasized, “is not only for Mexican companies to cross through Laredo but for them to produce, assemble, and distribute from here to all of North America.”

Binational Efficiency and Innovation

Romero detailed current projects under a binational framework of innovation and efficiency, including:

  • Modernization of international bridges
  • Expansion of inspection yards
  • Strengthening of the Mines Road trade corridor

On the technological side, Port Laredo promotes joint processing systems, pre-inspection programs, and digitalized customs flows that reduce waiting times and enhance cargo traceability—key to secure, efficient trade operations.

An Integrated Industrial Ecosystem

Aligned with its partners in Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and Querétaro, Port Laredo drives the creation of a fully integrated industrial ecosystem. Each day, the port processes over 20,000 commercial crossings, generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs in transportation, manufacturing, services, and tourism.

“Port Laredo is an economic engine for the entire border region,” said Romero. “Beyond trade, we promote social and regional development, educational initiatives, and business tourism that benefit families on both sides of the Rio Grande.”

Social and Regional Impact

Romero underscored Port Laredo’s role beyond economic growth. The port actively supports educational programs, collaborates with universities and chambers of commerce in both countries, and fosters business tourism to strengthen community ties.

“Our commitment is clear,” he concluded. “The growth of trade must also translate into opportunities for the families of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo.”
