The Motorcar Parts de México (MPA) company announced an investment of 200 million dollars to continue its expansion project in Tijuana , where it has become a leader in the remanufacturing of auto parts for the automotive industry.

For 15 years, this company of American capital settled on the border where little by little it was growing, finding an important niche in the remanufacturing of auto parts, which allowed it to bet on a construction project of eight buildings on a surface of a million square feet.

According to René Romandía Tamayo, manager of MPA , the plant began with production of 4,000 daily units of starters and alternators , currently reaching 25,000 pieces each day, with the United States being its main market.

Meanwhile, Mario Escobedo Carignan, head of the Secretariat of Sustainable Economy and Tourism of Baja California (SEST) , revealed that in a meeting with corporate executives, they reported that MPA's expansion project is in its final stage.

Once completed, he said, 300 additional jobs will be generated to the 3,700 reported by the company, whose remanufacturing products are distributed to the main auto parts chains such as Autozone, PetBoys and GM .

AN INDUSTRY WITH A HISTORY IN BC}

The official pointed out that in Baja California the automotive industry has a history of more than 50 years, where iconic companies in the sector maintain investments, such as  Kenworth, Toyota and Hyundai.

"Automotive manufacturers concentrate more than 140 supplier companies, which generate around 55,000 jobs," he said.

These industries are dedicated to the development of radiators, sensors and control systems, harnesses, horns, hydraulic systems, glass, wheels, metal stamping and machining, electronics and wiring assembly, and software development systems among others.

"Even during the pandemic, Baja California generated jobs and investments in the primary sectors, but also in industrial, manufacturing, automotive and supply real estate," Escobedo highlighted.

CHANGES IN THE VALUE CHAIN, AN OPPORTUNITY

The health emergency has modified global value chains, he said, which places the entity in a very convenient geographic position, because corporations are reconsidering having their supply closer to their production and market units.

"Mexico, and especially Baja California, offers shorter delivery times, backed by 13 treaties and 50 commercial alliances , respect for intellectual property, and land and sea access to California and the rest of the United States," said the owner. of the SEST .

In that sense, Romandía Tamayo stressed that Tijuana has been a strategic location for MPA , since its raw material comes from the United States and requires a fast crossing, which is obtained in this city where logistics lower costs.

Finally, the border offers advantages such as proximity to the main markets and suppliers, competitive production costs and skilled labor, as well as availability of technology.
