The McAllen Chamber of Commerce and the McAllen Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) hosted Trade Talks, a panel dedicated to analyzing international trade, policy shifts, and economic trends shaping the Texas–Tamaulipas region.

Held at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce headquarters, the event gathered business leaders and state and national representatives to discuss the challenges and opportunities of cross-border commerce. Panelists included Glenn Hamer, President and CEO of the Texas Association of Business; Jorge Torres, President of Interlink Trade Services; with Julián Álvarez, Executive Vice President of Lone Star National Bank, serving as moderator.

Elizabeth Suárez, CEO of both MEDC and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of creating dialogue spaces amid uncertainty caused by tariffs and changes in global trade regulations. “It is impossible to avoid the conversation about tariffs and their impact on the community. U.S. and Mexican entrepreneurs have always worked side by side, and these forums help us anticipate obstacles and identify opportunities,” Suárez noted.

Key topics included logistics, visa processes for transportation operators, and the importance of reinforcing cooperation between the private sector and government to address trade challenges.

Jorge Torres presented data showing the short- and long-term impact of tariffs: while companies absorbed additional costs in the first half of the year, consumers are expected to feel the price increases in the third and fourth quarters.

Suárez emphasized that the border region stands out for its resilience and unity, viewing new trade rules as an opportunity to improve practices and strengthen competitiveness. “We must not work against government but with it, regardless of party. This is the time to come together, share strategies, and prepare. While today we face difficulties, this is also an opportunity for growth,” she said.

Despite current challenges, Suárez expressed optimism for the remainder of the year, noting that the Rio Grande Valley could see three or four new investment announcements from Mexican companies seeking to operate on both sides of the border.

Through initiatives like Trade Talks, the McAllen Chamber of Commerce and MEDC reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the region’s economy by advancing international trade.
