McAllen International Airport is advancing one of the most significant infrastructure projects in its history through an expansion program valued between $160 million and $280 million, designed to accommodate the rapid growth the region has experienced in recent years.
Jeremy Santoscoy, Aviation Director at McAllen International Airport, reported that the airport recently received a $7 million federal grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), funding that will support the development of a new phase of the project.
“Several years ago, we conducted a capacity study that confirmed we were already facing significant space limitations. Based on that assessment, we began designing a comprehensive expansion that will allow us to meet future demand,” he explained.
The project includes the construction of a new concourse, the addition of four new boarding gates, the expansion of approximately 90,000 square feet, and the renovation of another 70,000 square feet of existing facilities.
Once completed, the airport will have the capacity to operate ten gates, infrastructure that, according to projections, will support the region’s growth for the next 20 to 25 years.
An Economic Engine for the Rio Grande Valley
The expansion responds to the sustained growth of the Rio Grande Valley, one of the fastest-growing demographic and economic regions in the United States.
Santoscoy noted that the airport currently generates an economic impact exceeding $1.2 billion annually and supports more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs.
“Continuing to invest in airport infrastructure is essential to the region’s economic development. We need adequate facilities to serve the more than 1.1 million passengers who use our airport each year,” he said.
In addition to improving the passenger experience, the expansion will strengthen the air connectivity needed to attract new investment and support the growth of key sectors of the regional economy.
Key Infrastructure for a Binational Region
The aviation director emphasized that McAllen’s border location makes the airport a vital component of the binational relationship between the United States and Mexico.
The airport serves thousands of travelers moving between both countries, while residents of the region frequently use both McAllen International Airport and Reynosa International Airport for domestic and international travel.
“We are a binational region that connects two countries. Airport infrastructure is essential to maintaining competitiveness, facilitating business, and strengthening economic and family ties on both sides of the border,” he said.
More Parking and Enhanced Services
Alongside the terminal expansion, the airport is developing new projects to improve the overall passenger experience.
Two new parking facilities are currently under construction, adding more than 240 spaces to the more than 1,300 already available. The airport is also modernizing areas related to rental car operations and other services aimed at streamlining passenger flow.
These improvements include investments in both terminal facilities and aviation infrastructure, as well as services for general aviation.
More Destinations and International Connectivity
Infrastructure growth is being accompanied by a strategy to expand air connectivity.
Among the newest routes is Aeroméxico’s daily service between McAllen and Monterrey, which launched just over a month ago and has already received a positive market response.
In addition, a new daily American Airlines route to Phoenix, Arizona, began service this June, strengthening connections to the U.S. West Coast, including destinations in California and the Pacific Northwest.
The airport currently operates between 22 and 23 daily flights through five airlines, offering seven nonstop destinations and global connectivity through the hub networks of American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.
The most in-demand destinations include Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, Las Vegas, Orlando, Monterrey, and Phoenix.
Looking Ahead
Over the next decade, airport leadership envisions a modernized terminal, greater operational capacity, and a broader route network that will strengthen McAllen’s position as a business and mobility hub in South Texas.
“We want to continue connecting people, businesses, and opportunities. Our goal is to grow alongside the region and remain a driving force for economic development in the Rio Grande Valley,” Santoscoy concluded.
With this investment and the planned improvements, McAllen International Airport is advancing the consolidation of strategic infrastructure that supports economic development and connectivity throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The terminal expansion, increased operational capacity, and addition of new air routes will help meet growing passenger demand, strengthen the region’s commercial and tourism ties, and support the continued growth of one of North America’s most dynamic binational regions.
