Laredo, Texas: From Border Port to Distribution Hub

The next step in the evolution of the Port of Laredo will not be to increase the number of trucks crossing the border, but to transform the city into a North American distribution hub by leveraging the logistics infrastructure already being developed across the region, including new distribution centers and industrial facilities ranging from 100,000 to 500,000 square feet.

During his participation in the panel The Future of the Corridor: AI, Infrastructure and the Next Era of Trade, held as part of the Port Laredo Global Trade Summit 2026, Daniel Covarrubias, Director of the Texas Center at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), said Laredo’s future will depend on capitalizing on its logistics advantages so that companies currently using the port establish their distribution centers in the city, generating greater added value for the region.

Logistics Infrastructure Strengthens Laredo’s Potential as a Distribution Center

Covarrubias explained that Laredo’s connectivity, supported by Interstates 35 and 69 and the future I-27 corridor, combined with the expansion of industrial parks and large-scale distribution centers, provides the conditions needed to store and distribute goods directly from the city to markets throughout the United States, reducing time and costs for companies.

“The key is to move beyond being only a port of transit and become a distribution hub. The infrastructure is already being built, and this will allow companies to distribute their products from Laredo to a large portion of the United States, generating greater value for the region.”

Green Corridors and Logistics Investment Drive the Competitiveness of the Port of Laredo

The specialist added that projects such as Green Corridors, along with continued investment in logistics infrastructure, will strengthen the competitiveness of the Port of Laredo in the coming years. Although these developments still face challenges related to financing and implementation, he said each new investment represents another step toward consolidating Laredo not only as the leading gateway for trade between Mexico and the United States, but also as one of the most important logistics hubs in North America.
