The Port of Brownsville has become the stage for a major industrial move as Karpowership, the world’s leading operator of floating power plants, acquired the AmFELS shipyard for $50 million from Singapore-based Seatrium Limited. The deal strengthens Texas’ position as a key hub for global energy and offshore innovation.

Through this divestment, Seatrium will shift its U.S. focus from shipyard operations to technology and engineering centers in Houston, Texas, and a service facility in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The company emphasized that this realignment is aimed at boosting operational efficiency and expanding its innovation capabilities.

For Karpowership, the acquisition expands its footprint in North America at a time when the Port of Brownsville is increasingly recognized as a strategic node for energy, maritime, and manufacturing projects. The company currently operates 50 Powerships with a total capacity of 10,000 MW across 20 countries, and aims to double its share of global gas-to-power capacity over the next decade.

The transaction also builds on the long-standing partnership between both firms. In August, they celebrated the launch of the Karadeniz LNGTS Americas in Singapore, and they have already signed agreements to develop next-generation floating units featuring modular systems and advanced carbon capture technologies.

Final completion of the deal remains subject to approval by the Port of Brownsville and the successful conclusion of ongoing projects at the shipyard, which Seatrium committed to delivering by the end of 2025.

This move highlights Texas’ growing influence as an energy and logistics powerhouse, attracting global investment while advancing cleaner and more efficient solutions in the offshore sector.
