Laredo,
Texas, continues to demonstrate strong growth prospects and reinforce its
position as one of North America's most important trade and logistics
platforms, driven by the dynamic commercial relationship between Mexico and the
United States and emerging opportunities in new industrial sectors.
According to
David Stedman, CEO of the Laredo Economic Development Corporation,
international trade remains the primary engine of the local economy and the
foundation of the city's long-term development strategy.
Stedman noted
that Laredo's trade volume increased by nearly $10 billion over the past year
and that the city recently regained its position as the nation's leading port
in terms of trade value, underscoring the strength and competitiveness of this
strategic border region.
“Trade is our
lifeblood,” Stedman said. “While we are actively working to diversify Laredo’s
economy, international commerce continues to be the foundation of everything
that drives prosperity in our community.”
Stedman
emphasized that Laredo’s geographic location at the center of Western
Hemisphere supply chains makes it uniquely positioned to support continued
growth in cross-border trade and attract new investments linked to North
America's increasingly integrated manufacturing ecosystem.
The CEO also
highlighted the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement
(USMCA) as an opportunity to strengthen regional competitiveness and enhance
the border's ability to support growing demand for trade and manufacturing
activity.
He noted that
continued collaboration among the three North American partners will be
essential to maintaining the region's global competitiveness and supporting
future economic growth.
Beyond trade,
Stedman pointed to the region's competitive advantages in energy resources and
infrastructure as key factors creating new opportunities in sectors such as
artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, logistics, and automotive
production.
For Stedman,
the combination of infrastructure, geographic advantages, and growth capacity
places Laredo at the center of the future economic relationship between Mexico
and the United States.
As trade
volumes continue to expand and supply chains become more integrated across
North America, Laredo is expected to play an increasingly important role as a
logistics gateway, manufacturing support hub, and economic development
catalyst.
