Interlink Trade Services Calls for Stronger Customs Compliance Ahead of the USMCA Review

The review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) requires companies to strengthen their customs compliance strategies and continuously monitor regulatory changes, said Jorge Torres, President of Interlink Trade Services, during the 2026 Port Laredo Global Trade Summit.
Torres explained that one of the main misconceptions within the business community is that the agreement will cease to operate. However, he clarified that the USMCA remains in effect through 2036 and that the current process includes annual reviews while the three countries work toward a new agreement on issues such as rules of origin and regional content requirements in the automotive industry.
“The recommendation for companies is to stay very well informed, ensure that their customs compliance departments remain up to date on what is happening, and maintain constant communication in order to make timely decisions. Today, customs operations are no longer merely an operational function; they are strategic.”
The specialist noted that industrial investments require a long-term vision. Therefore, access to current information and effective compliance management will allow companies to respond more quickly to any adjustments that may arise during the trade agreement review process.
According to the international trade expert, North America’s competitiveness will depend not only on infrastructure and logistics, but also on companies’ ability to anticipate regulatory changes and strengthen their international trade strategies.
