Brownsville

September 5, 2025

Nearly 90 years after its founding, the Port of Brownsville has become one of Mexico’s most important logistics partners. Today, 90% of the goods arriving at the port are destined for Mexico, supporting strategic sectors such as automotive, energy, and manufacturing.

During a visit led by Humberto Martínez, President of Index Nacional, together with the presidents and directors of Index Reynosa, Matamoros, and Nuevo Laredo, port authorities presented the relevance of this logistics platform and outlined expansion projects designed to strengthen binational trade.

Among the goods that cross daily into Mexico are:

  • Steel and aluminum, vital for the automotive and manufacturing industries.
  • Petroleum derivatives such as gasoline, diesel, lubricants, and petrochemicals.
  • Components for wind farms and the aerospace sector, including large-scale blades and structures.
  • Project cargo for industrial development, heavy machinery, and specialized products.

Agreements with Index

Following a strategic meeting to review the port’s activities, scope, and future projects, as well as a tour of terminals and operational areas, Index Nacional President Humberto Martínez and Guillermo Rico Leal, Director of Business Development and Marketing at the port, agreed on the importance of working together to strengthen international trade and attract new investments that benefit both Mexico and the United States.

The meeting also included William Dietrich, CEO of the Port of Brownsville; Arturo Gómez, Director of Operations; Alfredo Guajardo, President of Index Reynosa; Rolando González, President of Index Matamoros; Luis Méndez, Director of Index Reynosa; Roberto Mattus, Director of Index Matamoros; Javier Herrera, Director of Index Nuevo Laredo; Sergio Gracia, President of Mexico Industry; as well as Yeimy Núñez and Giselle Bravo, Coordinators of Foreign Trade and Logistics at Index Matamoros, and Juan Manuel Castañeda, Foreign Trade Manager at Index Nuevo Laredo.

In 2024, the Port of Brownsville handled 28 million tons of cargo, with projections to reach 60 million tons by 2030. The port currently generates more than 14,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Through these strategic meetings, Index Nacional, local councils, and the Port of Brownsville are strengthening collaboration to drive import and export industries and attract investments that create more jobs on both sides of the border.
