The expansion project for the Pharr International Bridge has officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the beginning of efforts to double the bridge’s commercial traffic capacity, allowing for up to 10,000 cargo trucks to cross daily between Reynosa, Tamaulipas, and Pharr, Texas.

This $40 million project includes the construction of four additional lanes, two of which will be dedicated to trucks enrolled in the FAST program. The expansion also involves the installation of new customs inspection modules designed to expedite the processing of perishable goods and refrigerated merchandise.

Currently, the Pharr International Bridge handles around 5,000 commercial trucks daily, making it a leading gateway for Mexico's perishable exports to the United States.

Luis Bazan, Director of the Pharr International Bridge, emphasized that the project can be seen as the construction of a "second bridge" parallel to the existing one.

"This expansion was necessary due to the increased trade volume we've seen in recent years. It will enable faster transit with shorter lines. Essentially, we are building a second bridge to enhance the efficiency of international trade between Tamaulipas and Texas," Bazan explained.

On the Mexican side, where the bridge connects Reynosa, Tamaulipas, with Pharr, Texas, the expansion work began in 2023 and is now 95% complete, according to Sergio Sánchez, Director of Technical Operations and Monitoring at the National Bank of Public Works and Services (Banobras).

"The Mexican side of the project is nearly finished, and we are coordinating closely to ensure a quick opening, which will further streamline traffic in Reynosa," Sánchez stated.

The entire project is being conducted under strict protocols, with operations expected to begin in 2025.

Officials, business leaders, and customs representatives from both Tamaulipas and Texas highlighted the significance of this crossing, which has facilitated imports worth $13.22 billion and exports worth $6.56 billion so far this year.
