Texas added new dispatchable power capacity with the opening of the Constellation Pin Oak peaking power plant in Fairfield, a 460-megawatt facility designed to support the grid during periods of high electricity demand.

The project is the first Texas Energy Fund loan-backed facility to come online, marking a milestone in the state’s effort to expand reliable generation as population growth, industrial activity, and power-intensive operations continue to increase electricity needs.

Dispatchable capacity for peak demand

The Pin Oak facility is designed to quickly deliver electricity when demand reaches its highest levels, adding flexible generation capacity for Texas homes and businesses. According to the governor’s office, the plant will provide 460 MW of dispatchable power and is part of a wider effort to reinforce grid reliability.

For manufacturers, data centers, logistics operations, and large employers, reliable electricity remains a core factor in long-term site selection and operating costs. Projects like Pin Oak add capacity that can help support growth while reducing pressure during peak consumption periods.

Energy infrastructure aligned with Texas’ growth

The opening also reflects the broader scale of Texas’ energy buildout. State officials noted that Texas has added more than 61,000 MW of new power over the past five years, reinforcing its position as the largest electricity-generating state in the country.

The event included participation from Representative Angelia Orr, Fairfield Mayor Bobby Nichols, Public Utility Commission of Texas Chairman Thomas Gleeson, Calpine President and CEO and Constellation Senior Executive Vice President Andrew Novotny, and Constellation Senior Executive Vice President and Chief External Affairs and Growth Officer David Dardis.
