During the Sinergias Summit 2025, held in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Liborio Alberto Flores Mendoza, President of the Mexican Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE Zacatecas) and Vice President of COMCE Binational Pharr–Texas, shared a clear perspective on the strategic role that the city of Pharr plays in trade between Mexico and the United States.

For Flores, Pharr’s relevance is no coincidence: it is a critical part of the agro-food, logistics, and commercial ecosystem that connects Mexico with the world’s largest market.

“Our mission is to bring the best of Mexico to the world and the best of the world to Mexico,” he stated.

Pharr’s role in the agro-food sector

Pharr is one of the main entry points for fresh Mexican products into the United States, which explains its relevance for COMCE-affiliated companies, particularly those engaged in agriculture and agribusiness.

Flores emphasized that many member companies rely directly on the trade flow that moves through this port of entry:

“Pharr is key for produce exporters. Its importance will continue to grow due to its infrastructure and U.S. market demand.”

Infrastructure and nearshoring in the Texas–Mexico border region

One of the main topics during the conversation was the ongoing logistics expansion in Pharr and the broader Rio Grande Valley.

Flores noted that strategic projects—such as the expansion of the Pharr International Bridge, the new ring road, and the growth of cold storage facilities—are preparing the region to absorb the accelerated trade flow projected for the coming years.

“Within the next five years, Pharr will have the infrastructure necessary to support Mexico’s industrial growth,” he predicted.

He also pointed out that 74% of Mexico’s GDP depends on foreign trade, and more than 80% of exports go to the United States—a figure that underscores the importance of strengthening the binational relationship.

In this context, Pharr emerges as a key hub for:

  • New investment attraction
  • Supply chain relocation
  • Mexican companies seeking faster access to the U.S. market

“This region will be one of the fastest-growing areas on the border in the coming years,” Flores said.

For COMCE, Sinergias Summit 2025 reaffirmed the importance of creating spaces where companies, governments, and business organizations can connect to enhance Mexico’s competitiveness. The partnership with Pharr—through trade, investment, and infrastructure—will remain a cornerstone for economic development in both Mexico and the border region.
