Binational collaboration between Texas and northeastern Mexico has been a key factor in McAllen’s sustained economic and manufacturing growth, said Sussie Flores, Vice President of Business Recruitment and Retention at the McAllen Economic Development Corporation (McAllen EDC).
Flores explained that McAllen’s success as an investment destination is directly linked to coordinated efforts among border cities and a long-term economic development strategy that leverages the region’s proximity to Mexico. This synergy has helped position the city as a regional leader in manufacturing and business attraction across companies of various sizes.
She highlighted the historical trajectory of McAllen EDC, which gained momentum during the expansion of trade and industry under the North American free trade framework. Flores acknowledged the vision of early economic development leaders such as Mike Allen and Keith Patridge, who helped establish a binational model that generated benefits on both sides of the border.
This model supported the consolidation of the maquiladora industry in Reynosa while simultaneously driving urban and economic growth in McAllen, particularly in the residential and commercial sectors.
“Industrial job creation in Mexico translated into increased economic activity in McAllen, strengthening retail, services, and real estate development,” Flores noted.
A Shared Regional Advantage
Flores emphasized that this dynamic has produced shared gains for the region, including job creation, stronger business networks, and a more competitive local economy. She also pointed to the evolution of McAllen EDC, which now works closely with the local Chamber of Commerce, expanding its impact beyond large industrial projects.
The organization continues to focus on supporting existing companies while attracting new investment aligned with the region’s cross-border strengths.
Guidance for Companies Entering the Region
Flores encouraged companies considering expansion or relocation in the region to connect with trusted economic development organizations that can provide clear information and strategic guidance to ensure successful and sustainable long-term operations.
As cross-border supply chains continue to evolve, McAllen’s binational foundation remains a defining competitive advantage for the city and the broader Rio Grande Valley industrial corridor.
