South Texas

May 10, 2026

Amid the accelerated growth of the manufacturing industry in Texas, Bexar County is investing in the development of specialized talent as a key strategy to meet the labor demand of the industrial sector.

During her participation in the South Central Texas Manufacturing Trade Show & Conference, Deborah Carter, Director of Economic Development for Bexar County, highlighted the county’s efforts to prepare a new generation of specialized technicians capable of responding to the needs of advanced manufacturing.

“We are here at the San Antonio Manufacturers Association (SAMA) expo, an event that grows every year and one we are always excited to participate in,” she said.

Technical training program accelerates workforce integration

One of the main projects promoted by Bexar County is Texas FAST Track, an intensive technical training program designed to turn participants into industrial maintenance technicians in just 10 weeks.

“We offer a full scholarship to help people become maintenance technicians in a 10-week period. Our local employers truly value this talent,” Carter explained.

The program is focused on preparing participants to quickly join industrial production lines, particularly in highly automated plants.

Specialized technicians, manufacturing’s greatest demand

According to Carter, manufacturing is currently one of the fastest-growing industries in Bexar County and neighboring counties, which has increased the need for skilled labor.

“The main challenge we hear from employers is the need for a specialized workforce, especially maintenance technicians who can work with robotic arms and keep production lines operating,” she said.

These profiles require advanced technical knowledge in hand tools, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings and automated systems, essential skills for modern manufacturing.

Talent development, key to industrial competitiveness

Carter highlighted that strengthening human capital is essential to sustaining the growth of the manufacturing sector and maintaining Texas’ competitiveness as an industrial destination.

“Industry-driven programs such as Texas FAST Track help prepare people so they arrive ready for the production floor and can provide immediate value,” she concluded.

Bexar County’s participation in the South Central Texas Manufacturing Trade Show & Conference reflects how talent development has become one of the strategic pillars for the future of manufacturing in Texas.
