Bexar County has become a pivotal location for economic and business expansion in Texas, driven by dynamic population growth, a privileged strategic location, and a strong focus on attracting investment in key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, particularly the automotive industry. This was highlighted by David E. Marquez, Executive Director of Economic and Community Development for Bexar County, in an interview with México Industry.

San Antonio: a fast-growing city with strong cultural ties to Mexico

San Antonio, the county's largest and most influential city, ranks among the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. Its young and diverse population, with a significant number of residents originally from Monterrey, Guanajuato, México City, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí, strengthens both cultural and economic integration with México. “The diversity of our people is a strategic asset that attracts companies looking for highly skilled talent,” Marquez emphasized.

Bexar County’s economic development is supported by competitive tax incentives and robust infrastructure, including available land, electricity, water, and natural gas—critical elements for attracting investment and supporting the operations of manufacturing, technology, and commercial industries.

The Automotive Sector and the TMASC

The rise of advanced manufacturing in Bexar County has been significantly bolstered by the presence of Toyota, whose operations have played a key role in the expansion of the regional automotive industry.

With production lines dedicated to models like the Tundra and Sequoia, Toyota has developed a vast network of more than 24 Tier 1 suppliers, along with numerous Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers, many of which are based in Mexico. “Our relationship with Mexico is essential. Many of Toyota’s suppliers are located there, which strengthens regional integration,” said Marquez.

This ecosystem has enhanced binational integration, facilitating trade and logistics between Texas and Mexico and solidifying an automotive supercluster that spans both countries. The Texas-Mexico Automotive Supercluster (TMASC), which includes Texas and the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí, has grown substantially over the past decade, attracting investments from leading OEMs such as Stellantis, BMW, Navistar, Caterpillar, and Tesla.

The development of the Texas - México automotive corridor has established a strong regional supplier base and optimized logistical infrastructure. “This corridor is a supercluster that strengthens the global competitiveness of the automotive industry on a binational level,” Marquez emphasized, highlighting the strategic importance of connectivity between Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Monterrey in supporting the region’s manufacturing growth.

Investment strategies and Workforce development

To sustain economic growth, the county offers property tax exemptions of up to 100% for up to 10 years, depending on the project's scope and impact. In addition, workforce development programs are in place, covering up to 100% of training costs for manufacturing employees.

“Talent is key to industrial development,” noted Marquez. Technical training programs ensure that companies have access to a skilled workforce tailored to the specific needs of strategic sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and energy.

Strategic relationship with México

Bexar County maintains trade missions to Monterrey and other Mexican cities to promote investment and strengthen partnerships. Its proximity to México and the continuous flow of Mexican businesspeople and residents have facilitated the growth of industrial and commercial clusters that integrate both economies.

Moreover, San Antonio shares a strong cultural familiarity with many Mexican cities, reflected in its architecture, culinary offerings, and commercial presence. “It’s a place where Mexicans feel welcome. We have a special connection that we’re committed to nurturing,” Marquez concluded.

Growth outlook

With a solid industrial foundation and a strategic partnership with México, Bexar County is positioning itself as a hub for advanced manufacturing, innovation, and business development. “The future is promising. We are focused on building a strong, sustainable, and globally competitive economy,” Marquez emphasized.

Bexar County’s economic landscape will continue to evolve, presenting ongoing opportunities for investment and expansion, solidifying Texas as a key center for trade and manufacturing in North America.
