Aerospace and Tech Innovation: Rio Grande Valley, Texas Emerges as a Key Player

The Rio Grande Valley in Texas has emerged as a pivotal hub for technological advancement and innovation within the United States' aerospace sector. This critical role was highlighted by Walt Ugalde, an economic development executive for NASA's T2X program, who emphasized the significance of local economic development corporations and universities in driving this progress.

Ugalde stressed the productive sector’s active interest in collaborating with NASA and capitalizing on opportunities to enhance regional talent.

"In the T2X program, which focuses on pushing NASA developed technologies to the marketplace for use by industry, we are constantly seeking strategic partnerships that strengthen our commitment to science, technology, and commercialization efforts. This region holds a privileged position, and our presence here aims to forge new relationships that help enable the T2X mission and regional economic development initiatives. We have received a very positive response, and we are confident that favorable outcomes will follow”, Ugalde stated during the “New Initiatives for Human Exploration” meeting, organized by the South Texas Council for Economic Progress (COSTEP) in Mission, Texas.

The executive also underscored that innovation is a cornerstone for NASA, particularly in its mission to advance human exploration for its Moon to Mars initiatives.

"At NASA, we offer various Industry entry points and programs that can enable and enhance regional workforce development programs. . With the support of the business sector and universities, we want the community to be aware of the NASA programs that are available. It is always a pleasure to visit the region and work in collaboration with local organizations”, Ugalde added.

Promoting Talent in the Rio Grande Valley

NASA has been fostering interest among students in the region in disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through internships, workshops, and space exploration projects, funded by its Expanding Frontiers NASA Trek Entrepreneurship program in Brownsville, Texas.

Furthermore, innovation and business sector involvement have been bolstered through the development of new technological tools. The COSTEP event brought together business leaders, representatives from economic development organizations, and universities, all of whom expressed their interest in collaborating with NASA's various programs to strengthen the aerospace industry in the region.
