With a strong foundation of values instilled in its students, the Texas A&M University Higher Education Center in McAllen is shaping the leaders of tomorrow who will drive a prosperous and unified community, ensuring a better quality of life for the residents of the Rio Grande Valley.
After beginning remote operations in 2017 and officially opening its campus in 2018, the Texas A&M Higher Education Center has continued to expand its facilities across a 100-acre site in the Tres Lagos community, north of McAllen. It features state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories and currently serves 428 students, with enrollment expected to grow to 500 in the upcoming academic period.
The Center offers a variety of degree programs tailored to meet the growth, development, and workforce needs of the Rio Grande Valley. Its mission is to educate specialists who will contribute to the region’s prosperity and productivity.
The current degree programs available at the Texas A&M Higher Education Center in McAllen include:
- Agricultural Economics
- Biomedical Sciences
- Construction Science
- Middle Grades Math and Science Education (Grades 4-8 Certification)
- Human Resource Development
- Interdisciplinary Engineering
- Interdisciplinary Engineering Technology
- Maritime Business Administration
- Public Health
- Nursing
Among these, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, and Human Resource Development stand out as the most popular programs. These specializations attract students due to their strong professional preparation and clear pathways to advanced studies, including medical and veterinary schools.
The Center’s primary focus is on undergraduate education, addressing the region’s critical need for accessible higher education. This strategic decision is driven by the Rio Grande Valley’s younger population and the growing demand for affordable educational opportunities. While future expansions to include master's and doctoral programs are anticipated, the Center remains dedicated to providing a solid undergraduate foundation. To date, it has successfully graduated around 100 students, with many others transferring to the main Texas A&M campus in College Station to complete their studies.
At Texas A&M McAllen, human development is prioritized from the beginning of each student’s academic journey. Unlike many institutions, the Center prides itself on offering a rigorous education complemented by opportunities for students to engage in leadership development, character building, and community involvement.
For Dr. Sandra E. Hansmann, Academic Director of the Texas A&M Higher Education Center in McAllen, the campus’s greatest legacy is its commitment to educational excellence and the positive impact its graduates will have as leaders in the workforce.
“When our students go out into the world, you don’t have to check if they’re wearing their Aggie ring — you can tell they’re Aggies by their character. I firmly believe our students are our legacy. The way they present themselves to the world — that will be our legacy,” she explained.
To expand access to higher education and promote equal opportunities, the Center offers financial support programs for families earning $125,000 or less annually. Eligible family members can enroll and attend without paying tuition. Additionally, exclusive scholarships are available for McAllen students, alongside the financial aid and incentives provided by the main campus.
For over a century, Texas A&M University has contributed to regional industrial and economic growth through its research centers and extension programs. A notable example of its impact is the development of the 1015 onion, a resilient and sweet variety named after a local highway, showcasing the Center’s leadership in agricultural innovation.
As the Texas A&M Higher Education Center in McAllen continues to grow, it remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality education and contributing to the academic and economic development of the region.
Currently, the second building of the Texas A&M Higher Education Center is under construction, with plans for a third building to the north of the property. The new facility will house advanced research laboratories, further enhancing the Center’s capacity for innovation and discovery.
