Saronic Technologies marked the start of its Port Alpha shipyard project with a groundbreaking ceremony today at the Port of Brownsville, bringing together Vice President JD Vance, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and Saronic co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas. The event advanced a planned investment of more than $3 billion that is expected to create up to 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade, expanding South Texas’ role in shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing.
Port Alpha is expected to create up to 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade, bringing shipbuilding, advanced engineering, and new supplier opportunities to South Texas.
The attendees included Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought, U.S. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Nathaniel Moran, Texas State Sen. Adam Hinojosa, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. and Brownsville Navigation District Chairman Sergio Tito López. The event was led by Saronic Technologies Co-Founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas, marking the start of the company’s shipyard project at the Port of Brownsville.
Vance and Abbott addressed the project’s significance for national security and economic development, highlighting Brownsville’s growing role in American shipbuilding. Abbott emphasized the employment opportunities the shipyard is expected to create and its contribution to producing vessels for U.S. defense needs.
Building New Maritime Manufacturing Capacity
Port Alpha’s initial development covers 835 acres, with options to expand to nearly 4,400 acres. Its first operating phase will include approximately 1.2 million square feet of enclosed production space, supported by steel processing and waterfront assembly facilities. Saronic selected the JE Dunn–Alberici joint venture to construct that phase.
Initial production will include Landing Craft Utility vessels for the U.S. Navy, following a recently awarded contract.
Founded in Austin in 2022, Saronic combines maritime manufacturing with software and autonomous systems. ProTexas Industry’s earlier coverage described Port Alpha as a facility designed to incorporate robotics, automation, and digital production processes into shipbuilding.
That approach brings together traditional industrial capabilities, such as fabrication and machining, with expertise in software, controls, and advanced engineering.
Connecting the Shipyard with Brownsville’s Industrial Base
The groundbreaking builds on Brownsville’s efforts to attract manufacturers and expand the network of businesses supporting major industrial projects.
The 700-acre Greater Brownsville Tech Park is being developed to provide space for suppliers and manufacturers connected to companies such as Saronic and SpaceX. Its coverage also identified potential opportunities for contractors, logistics providers, technology companies, and industrial service businesses as Saronic establishes operations.
Preparing Workers for Shipbuilding Careers
Saronic anticipates positions in welding, machining, robotics, software engineering, and naval architecture. The company is working with Texas, Cameron County, and regional educational institutions to develop technical training and apprenticeship pathways.
Workforce preparation has also been a focus of local manufacturing discussions. In an interview published by ProTexas Industry, Mike Willis, executive director of the South Texas Manufacturers Association, identified Saronic’s planned shipyard as a source of opportunities for manufacturing workers, software engineers, and designers.
With deepwater access, land for expansion, and partnerships focused on technical training, Brownsville offers manufacturers a location where production capacity and workforce development can grow together.
