Port Laredo Strengthens Its Strategy to Rank Among the World's Top 10 Ports
July 14, 2026
Positioning the Port of Laredo among the world's ten most important ports is the vision that began to take shape during the first edition of the Port Laredo Global Trade Summit 2026, an event that brought together more than 600 business leaders, international trade specialists, government officials, and industry representatives to analyze the future of logistics, infrastructure, and North American competitiveness.
With the participation of 31 speakers and 28 exhibiting companies, the Summit positioned Laredo not only as the continent's leading land port, but also as a new strategic platform for building partnerships, attracting investment, and strengthening economic integration between Mexico and the United States.
"We are very grateful to the industry for its response to this first Global Trade Summit. We began with an agenda focused on understanding the challenges of global trade, but above all, on finding solutions that allow companies to stay two or three steps ahead," said Felipe Gabriel Romero, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Port of Laredo.
A Logistics Ecosystem Built Over More Than 270 Years
For Romero, Laredo's leadershipis not based solely on its strategic location along Interstate 35, the main trade corridor between Mexico and the United States. The true differentiator, he explained, is the logistics ecosystem the city has developed over more than two and a half centuries, integrating infrastructure, knowledge, operational experience, and close collaboration between the public and private sectors.
"We are number one for areason. It is not only geography; a logistics, transportation, and international trade ecosystem with more than 270 years of experience was created here. No one comes here to teach us how logistics works because it has been built here over generations," he said.
Today, the Port of Laredo brings together highway, rail, and air transportation operations, establishing itself as one of the most important logistics hubs in the Western Hemisphere and a critical link in North American supply chains.
More Than a Summit: A Platform for Generating Business
In addition to the conference program, the event was designed as a space to connect the various stakeholders in international trade.
Over two days, manufacturers, logistics operators, customs agencies, transportation companies, infrastructure developers, economic development organizations, and technology solution providers exchanged experiences, identified opportunities for collaboration, and established business relationships.
"In business, relationships matter most. Here we bring together all the industry stakeholders so they can talk, build connections, and grow their companies. This is also where business begins," Romero emphasized.
That vision turns the Global Trade Summit into a platform for promoting investment, innovation, andbinational cooperation—factors that are now essential for maintaining competitiveness amid the changes reshaping global trade.
The Next Goal: Competing Among the World's Leading Ports
Following the success of its first edition, the Port of Laredo has already confirmed the Global Trade Summit 2027, with the goal of establishing the event as one of the leading international forums specializing in logistics, manufacturing, and foreign trade.
Romero explained that the port's growth will depend not only on increased cargo volume, but also on its ability to continue investing in infrastructure, adopt new technologies, and strengthen collaboration among every member of the logistics chain.
"We have always been number one, but now we are taking responsibility for bringing that leadership to the next level. This Summit is a tool for inviting the industry to come to Laredo, build relationships, and expand their businesses," he said.
A Shared Vision for the Future of Trade
The first edition of the Port Laredo Global Trade Summit made it clear that the future of international trade will increasingly depend on collaboration among governments, companies, and organizations on both sides of the border.
For Laredo, the challenge is no longer only to preserve its position as North America's leading land port, but to project that leadership onto the global stage through modern infrastructure, technological innovation, and a logistics ecosystem built over more than 270 years.
