The expansion of the Pharr International Bridge will begin operations in June 2026, marking a strategic step toward strengthening trade between Mexico and the United States and consolidating this crossing as one of the most important along the northern border.
This was reported by Luis Bazán, Director of the Pharr International Bridge, who noted that the project is more than 95% complete. Although it will begin operating before the summer, the official inauguration and ribbon-cutting ceremony are scheduled for November of this year.
The Pharr Bridge expansion includes four new lanes, equivalent to a “twin bridge,” which will allow the crossing to double its operating capacity and streamline the movement of goods between Pharr and Reynosa.
“We are going to have 100% more capacity. These are four new lanes that will allow us to significantly improve wait times, but the objective is no longer just to reduce them, but to eliminate them,” Bazán said.
Pharr Bridge seeks to become an intermodal logistics node
In addition to the physical expansion, Pharr Bridge is promoting a long-term strategy to consolidate itself as an intermodal hub, integrating land, maritime, rail and air transportation to strengthen the region’s logistics competitiveness.
In this context, Bazán highlighted the synergy with the Port of Brownsville, from where goods arriving by sea are transported by road to cross into Mexico through Pharr.
“We have to think about how to become an intermodal port, connecting not only maritime transportation, but also airports and railroads. That is the future of foreign trade,” he said.
Binational coordination and company certification
Another priority challenge is achieving greater binational coordination in operating hours between Mexican and U.S. authorities, especially ahead of the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“Operating hours have to be the same. We must promote productivity by eliminating operational differences between both sides of the border,” he emphasized.
In terms of security and trade facilitation, the bridge is working to increase the number of companies certified under programs such as OEA and C-TPAT, with the goal of moving from the current 35% to 60% in the coming years.
With this expansion, Pharr Bridge strengthens its position as one of the most important logistics platforms for foreign trade between Mexico and the United States.
