With the intention of improving the air infrastructure of the city of Edinburg, Texas, and increasing the competitive advantages of the region, more than 10 million dollars will be invested to modernize, maintain and expand the facilities of The South Texas International Airport.
After the approval of the General Assignments Law (HB 1), with which the threshold and beacon lighting will be addressed, the runways will be widened and a chain of new illuminated signaling will be implemented at the aerodrome.
There will also be navigation aid systems, replacement lamps, transformers, and an integration plan with advanced technology will be developed to make the airport more competitive, the city of Edinburg reported.
This air terminal is located within Rio South Texas, an area where economic and commercial development has increased in recent years and whose proximity to the Mexican border gives it competitive advantages, which is why it is currently the airport with the highest capacity for access for business class aviation.
Although the investment could exceed $11,111,112 due to the extra funds that the city of Edinburg will contribute, it intends that the facilities of The South Texas International Airport remain at the forefront.
The appeal was obtained after the efforts of Senator Juan Hinojosa and the president of the transportation house, Terry Canales, who played a fundamental role, as well as the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott. "The collaboration between local and state entities has paved the way for this monumental investment, which will contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of the region."
The South Texas International Airport is within a 25-mile range of the Mexican border and is close to highways such as US 281 and FM 490.
Currently, the airport's runway is 5,000 feet (1,524 kilometers), but has the capacity to extend to more than 9,000 feet (2,743 kilometers).
