The Harlingen Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) has facilitated a new collaboration between the Region One Education Service Center and Lone Star National Bank (LSNB) to launch an educator externship program designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world business experience.

As part of this initiative, a Rio Grande Valley teacher will participate in an on-site externship at LSNB, gaining firsthand exposure to financial operations, workforce expectations, and emerging career pathways in the banking industry. The knowledge and insight gained through this experience will be integrated into classroom instruction, helping to align Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs with local and regional workforce needs.

Connecting education and industry for long-term impact

The externship program is part of a broader strategy led by HEDC to strengthen Harlingen’s talent development ecosystem through partnerships that unite educators, employers, and community stakeholders. By promoting hands-on collaboration, the initiative equips teachers with the tools to inspire students and prepare them for high-demand, high-skill professions in finance and other key sectors.

“This type of partnership ensures that our education system remains connected to real industry needs,” HEDC representatives emphasized. “It helps students understand the career possibilities available right here in our community.”

Investing in Harlingen’s future workforce

The partnership reflects Harlingen’s commitment to building a sustainable workforce pipeline that meets the evolving demands of regional employers. Through collaboration with institutions like Region One and companies such as LSNB, HEDC continues to foster opportunities for career readiness, skill development, and community growth.

By supporting education–industry initiatives, Harlingen EDC reinforces its mission to ensure that the city remains a competitive and inclusive environment where talent and business grow together.
