The Greater Brownsville Space Summit brought together industry representatives, economic development leaders, public officials, and students on November 4 to explore how the space sector can create lasting manufacturing, business, and career opportunities across South Texas.

Part of the International Economic Development Council’s centennial event series, the summit featured a SpaceX presentation and a keynote address by former NASA astronaut and engineer José Hernández. The program connected Brownsville’s growing space industry with the workforce, suppliers, and educational partnerships needed to support it.

Speakers included Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr.; Nathan Ohle, president and CEO of IEDC; Norman Garza Jr., executive director of the Texas Space Commission; Gilberto Salinas, president and CEO of Greater Brownsville EDC; and Sean Takacs of SpaceX, whose presentation addressed production and metrology at Starbase. Jovanna Rangel, GBEDC’s senior director of defense and space affairs, served as master of ceremonies.

Officials recognized at the gathering included Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III and Brownsville City Commissioners Nurith Galonsky and Gustavo De León.

Throughout the program, speakers emphasized the importance of preparing local workers, connecting regional businesses to industrial supply chains, and aligning education with employers’ needs. Hernández’s keynote reinforced that message through his personal journey from a migrant farmworker family to engineering and spaceflight.

For South Texas, the summit highlighted an opportunity that extends across manufacturing, technical trades, engineering, and business services. Its central purpose was to connect industrial growth with the people and partnerships that can help the region participate in, and benefit from that expansion.
