With the participation of around 400 high school students, Rally in the Valley 5.0 was held as an initiative focused on connecting young people with the industries driving the region’s development and exploring real opportunities for employment, higher education, and professional growth in high-demand sectors.

Organized by the Greater Brownsville Economic Development Corporation (EDC) in collaboration with local authorities and workforce organizations, the event brought together companies, educational institutions, and leaders from the productive sector at the Brownsville Events Center, with the goal of strengthening the region’s future workforce.

Xochil Paredes, Talent Development Manager at Greater Brownsville EDC, explained that the event is designed to guide upper-level students as they prepare to transition into the workforce.

“It is meant to show them what happens after graduation, what opportunities exist in Brownsville and across the region, which companies are hiring, and what internship options are available,” she said.

She noted that one of the event’s main values is allowing students to hear directly from professionals about the skills the market demands, what day-to-day work looks like, and what challenges they may face as they begin their careers.

In its fifth edition, the event expanded its reach by including schools from other cities, consolidating its growth as a regional platform for career and workforce guidance.

“Students are very important to the community because they represent our future workforce. These types of spaces are designed to inspire them and give them clarity about their future,” she added.

The program included panels with leading companies from strategic sectors, as well as a career and university expo featuring hands-on experiences, simulators, and interactive activities that allowed attendees to gain direct exposure to different professions.

Mock interviews and networking exercises were also held, with the goal of preparing students for real hiring processes.

Rafael Vela, CEO of Workforce Solutions Cameron, emphasized the importance of connecting young people with industry and higher education from an early stage.

“There is nothing more important than creating opportunities right here, so our young people do not have to leave. This represents a course correction for our region,” he said.

He noted that emerging sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, and aerospace are beginning to gain relevance, driven by new investment, creating opportunities for better-paid jobs.

He also highlighted that collaboration between companies and educational institutions is key to ensuring that academic training is aligned with the real needs of the labor market.

Finally, both organizers and industry leaders agreed that initiatives like this not only strengthen regional economic development, but also help young people discover their vocation.
