The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) announced that in the coming weeks it will begin operating publicly under the name Greater Brownsville EDC, as part of a strategic brand update aimed at aligning with terminology more widely recognized in the economic development industry.
According to the organization, the change applies only to its public-facing name. Its legal designation will remain Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation, and the transition does not involve any modifications to its mission, governance structure, or commitment to the economic development of the City of Brownsville.
“The growth of Brownsville and its rising national profile make it important for our organization to speak the same language as the industry we work with,” said Ben Peña, Chairman of the GBIC Board of Directors. “The term EDC is widely recognized by investors, developers, and site selectors, and it helps more clearly communicate our role in the city’s economic development.”
Economic Development Corporations (EDCs) focus on attracting new investment, supporting business expansion, generating quality jobs, and promoting long-term economic growth. As Brownsville’s Type A Economic Development Corporation, the organization collaborates with local, regional, state, and private-sector partners to strengthen the economy through strategic incentives, workforce development, site readiness, and business attraction and retention efforts.
Gilberto Salinas, President and CEO of the organization, noted that the name change more accurately reflects the work the institution has always performed.
“Our work has always been centered on economic development. Transitioning to Greater Brownsville EDC better describes what we do every day: support businesses, create opportunities for residents, and position Brownsville as a competitive destination for investment,” Salinas said.
Over the next several weeks, the new name will be gradually incorporated into the organization’s website, promotional materials, and official communications. During this transition period, the community and strategic partners may still encounter references to the GBIC name.
“This is the same organization, with the same team, mission, and commitment to Brownsville,” Salinas added. “It’s simply a clearer way to tell our story.”
