The Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center (TMAC) is playing a pivotal role in the development and expansion of manufacturing companies in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Through a range of specialized support services, TMAC is enabling local manufacturers to enhance their competitiveness, streamline operations, and access new markets.

TMAC offers a variety of programs including training, certifications, and courses focused on key areas such as operations, technology integration, workforce development, continuous improvement processes, and consulting. These initiatives are tailored to meet the unique needs of each company, ensuring personalized guidance.

TMAC’s cost-effective solutions, which are offered at lower rates compared to other providers, are backed by a national network. Nationwide Program

TMAC is part of the broader Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) (https://www.nist.gov/mepprogram, an initiative of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which has a presence across the United States. In Texas, there are eight TMAC (https://tmac.org/centers that focus on fostering business growth and development. The TMAC center in South Texas is part of The University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), where it offers personalized assistance to industries aiming to improve processes and grow.

The TMAC approach involves a comprehensive analysis of each company’s strengths and opportunities for improvement. This allows for the creation of customized action plans that address key areas, including workforce development, industry certifications, and the direct implementation of engineering projects.

“This system gives us access to top mentors and allows us to tailor our services. We can assist companies with any of their needs at costs significantly below market rates,” Ortiz explained.

Customized Programs for Diverse Needs

TMAC’s services are wide-ranging, supporting companies in product development, process analysis, and technology integration. For instance, TMAC helps businesses assess the feasibility of new products and connect with suppliers. On the technology front, the organization assists in integrating advanced tools into production lines, such as process simulation, cybersecurity, robotics, and emerging technologies.

Workforce development is another high-demand area, with TMAC offering numerous programs and courses aimed at enhancing employee skills and capacities.

The automotive industry, according to Ortiz, represents a sector with tremendous growth potential. “We have observed significant growth in technology and demand, particularly in the automotive sector, covering areas such as advanced metrology, automation, assembly, inspection, and molding. The region has great potential for technological adoption,” Ortiz stated. The food industry also shows promise, with local companies seeking TMAC’s help in adopting robust processes and automation to meet high-volume contract demands.

TMAC programs have already been utilized by various manufacturing and logistics companies in cities such as Rio Grande, Edinburg, McAllen, Mission, Harlingen, and Brownsville, demonstrating the center’s wide-reaching impact on the region.

Looking ahead, TMAC aims to further promote collaboration between the business sector and its services, driving industrial growth and economic development throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
