The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has formalized its commitment to advancing the soft landing initiative in the region through Pharr’s Global Business Hub, in partnership with the City of Pharr and its Economic Development Corporation (Pharr EDC).

The Global Business Hub is a dedicated space providing guidance and resources for foreign companies aiming to expand in the United States. Linda Ufland, Director of Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Commercialization at UTRGV, explained that with the university’s experience and incubation programs, UTRGV offers a support network that includes specialized knowledge, key contacts, and advisory services to ease the establishment of new businesses.

Ufland emphasized that UTRGV’s involvement goes beyond supporting foreign entrepreneurs; it also includes a deep-rooted collaboration with Mexico.

The university has cultivated connections with Mexican institutions such as the Universidad AutĂłnoma de Nuevo LeĂłn (UANL) to foster academic exchanges for students and faculty, alongside joint projects in entrepreneurship, research, and technology innovation. These projects aim to address economic development and sustainability, benefiting the region on both sides of the border.

Ufland underscored the need for joint solutions to specific environmental and economic development challenges that impact not only the border region but also the global community.

“UTRGV’s commitment on the border extends beyond academics; we aim to be an innovation bridge that impacts both the U.S. and Mexico,” Ufland said.

Through this collaboration, UTRGV and the City of Pharr open the door to development opportunities in entrepreneurship, innovation, and strengthened economic and social ties between the two countries, setting a precedent in cross-border initiatives.
