The McAllen Economic Development Corporation (McAllen EDC) is advancing multiple programs, in partnership with organizations and universities, designed to enhance professional competencies among higher education students, addressing retention and promotion challenges faced by businesses in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas.

These initiatives are launched in collaboration with the Employers’ Association, Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center, Management Training Solutions, Workforce Solutions, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). They target students in fields related to manufacturing, industrial processes, IT, and marketing, offering paid internships, training courses, and skill-building workshops designed to strengthen their professional competencies.

Josh Vazquez, Workforce Development Director at McAllen EDC, emphasized the importance of developing skills aligned with industry needs to ensure students are fully prepared for the job market.

Among the programs is the “Training Initiative,” which provides free sessions on leadership, human resource analysis, and process mapping to enhance the skills of local employees; and “LEAD,” a 12-week internship giving UTRGV students hands-on experience in marketing and IT support, easing their transition into the workforce.

Additionally, McAllen EDC collaborates with Workforce Solutions to promote industry knowledge for educators, equipping teachers with insights from various industrial sectors to better prepare students for the workforce.

Vazquez also highlighted the “Infrastructure Jobs Grant Partnership.” In collaboration with Workforce Solutions and the U.S. Department of Labor, this program aims to align training programs with employer needs in key sectors such as renewable energy, transportation, and broadband infrastructure.
