Border Trade Alliance (BTA) México announces new leadership

Committed to advocating for the needs of border communities and fostering economic, commercial, and industrial growth, Carlos García was sworn in as the new President of Border Trade Alliance (BTA) México.

During a general session held in Brownsville, hosted by IBC Bank, outgoing president Joaquín Spamer presented a comprehensive report highlighting key achievements of his tenure. These included BTA's active engagement in cities along the “dry border” region and the establishment of strategic partnerships with organizations such as the Texas Economic Development Corporation, INDEX Nacional and INDEX USA, the Mexican Association of Economic Development Secretaries, the Confederation of Customs Brokers of the Mexican Republic, and the Mexican Association of Industrial Parks, among others.

“We know the future will bring both challenges and opportunities. Now more than ever, our efforts and initiatives are critical for North America’s development. I am confident that our colleague and friend Carlos García is the perfect leader for this new chapter,” said Spamer.

In his inaugural speech, Carlos García outlined four key commitments:

1. Strengthening Membership
   Ensuring robust and active participation from all members.
2. Expanding Institutional Collaborations
   Building on existing agreements and exploring new avenues for collaboration on both sides of the border.
3. Positioning BTA as a Strategic Advocate
   Establishing BTA as a trusted voice to ensure that border priorities are represented at the highest decision-making levels.
4. Collaborating on USMCA Review
   Working alongside BTA USA to review and advance the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Carlos García brings extensive experience from the private sector, trade associations, and the political arena, which positions him to forge the necessary cross-border alliances. His leadership aims to ensure that the realities of the border region are understood both in Washington, D.C., and at Mexico’s Palacio Nacional, preventing decisions made from afar from becoming barriers to regional development.

Joining García on the 2025–2027 BTA México board are Luis Cantú, President of the Binational Council for Economic Development of Reynosa, as Secretary, and Eduardo Acosta, Vice President of RL Jones Customhouse, as Treasurer.

Founded in 1986 in the United States, BTA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing critical issues affecting trade, transportation, infrastructure, and security in North America. In 2001, the organization established BTA México, formally known as Asociación BTA-Alianza del Comercio Fronterizo, A.C., to focus on priorities specific to Mexico.
