Becton Dickinson will invest $ 56 million for its plant in Mexico; will produce syringes for vaccination processes

With the growing global demand for pre-fill syringes and advanced drug delivery systems , Becton Dickinson ( BD ) confirmed that it will invest $ 56 million to meet this need.

With this financing, the medical technology company will install a new production line for these products , as well as for the construction of a cap assembly plant for injection devices .

The syringes that will be created at the plant located in the Cuamatla Industrial Park , Cuautitlán Izcalli, State of Mexico, will be for a new pneumococcal vaccine recently approved by the Food And Drugs Administration (FDA). 

Julio Duclos, vice president and general director of Mexico, Caribbean and Central America of BD, declared that the investment is part of a four-year global plan to continue promoting health in which the corporation will invest 1.2 billion dollars in different countries , with what is sought to expand and update its manufacturing capacity and technology.

The project in Mexico will generate around 200 direct and 400 indirect jobs for builders, operators and professionals in the field.The new infrastructure will be in the plant that BD has in the State of Mexico and will cover 4,000 square meters in a two-story building and is projected to be completed in August 2022. With this, the factory will reach more than 130,000 square meters of construction .

Cecilia Ríos, director of the BD plant in Cuautitlán Izcalli, stated that the expansion is a strategic decision that will allow increasing the complex's capacity to 11% , thus providing agility in the production of glass syringes based on requirements of the pharmaceutical industry.

"320 million units will be produced annually, in addition to the current capacity of the Cuautitlán Izcalli plant and our participation in the global glass syringe business will increase by 10%," he said.

Becton Dickinson produces 3.1 billion disposable and pre-filled syringes in more than five plants distributed throughout the world, of which the Mexican headquarters achieves a 52% contribution to the global market for products in this category, making it the largest plant in the world. Pharmaceutical Systems business globally.

The new project joins the 11 manufacturing plants that BD has in Mexico, where it began operations just over 60 years ago and currently has a workforce of 17,000 employees in the country.
